Based in Dedham, Serving Hancock County. From digging the foundation for your new home to grading a backyard for a pool—we provide the heavy excavation to get your project out of the ground.
Your local experts for foundation digging, lot leveling, and drainage solutions. We turn rough land into build-ready sites.

Before the carpenters can frame or the masons can pour, the dirt work has to be perfect. If the hole is too deep, you waste money on concrete. If the grade is wrong, your basement floods.
At H&S Sitework Construction, we specialize in Residential Excavation. Whether you are breaking ground on a custom home in Ellsworth or adding a garage in Dedham, we own the laser equipment and the heavy iron to hit the grade precisely.
We don't just "dig holes." We manage the entire site—from stumping the lot to backfilling the foundation and spreading the final layer of loam.
We handle all the earthmoving tasks that don't fit into a tidy category. If it involves dirt, rock, or drainage, we do it.

Many homeowners think excavation is just "moving dirt." But in Maine, you are fighting ledge, frost, and water. A bad excavation job can ruin your project before it starts.
Here is why our clients in Hancock County trust H&S:
1. Laser Accuracy: We use laser levels on every dig. We ensure your foundation floor is perfectly flat and your yard is pitched correctly to shed water away from the house.
2. Controlled Backfilling: We don't just dump dirt against your new concrete walls. We backfill in "lifts" (layers) and compact it properly to prevent the ground from sinking two years later.
3. Drainage First: We install perimeter drains (French drains) and swales during the rough grade phase. We solve water problems before they happen, keeping your basement dry.
4. "Stump & Grub" Capabilities: Unlike our Forestry Mulching service (which leaves roots in the ground), our site work includes pulling stumps and removing organic material so you can build on solid ground.
We don’t just work on new homes. H&S Sitework handles the "medium-sized" projects that many big commercial companies ignore.
Common Projects Include:
Pole Barn Site Prep: Leveling the pad, bringing in structural fill, and compacting the base for concrete.
Garage Foundations: Digging frost walls or preparing slab-on-grade bases for detached garages.
Swimming Pools: Precision digging for inground pools or leveling pads for above-ground installs.
Yard Reclaiming: Pushing back the treeline, removing boulders, and grading uneven terrain to create a usable lawn.
Retaining Wall Prep: Excavating the base and installing drainage stone for block or boulder walls.
Step 1: The Clearing We start by removing trees, stumps, and topsoil. We separate the "organics" (which rot) from the structural dirt. If you need a simple clearing without soil disturbance, check out our Forestry Mulching page.
Step 2: The Dig We excavate to the frost depth required by code. If we hit ledge, we have hydraulic hammers to break it out. We stockpile the good fill for later use.
Step 3: The Backfill Once the foundation is poured or the utility is installed, we carefully put the dirt back. We compact it to minimize settling.
Step 4: The Finish Grade We spread loam (topsoil), rake out the rocks, and grade the surface so it is ready for hydro-seeding or sod.
A lumpy, wet yard isn't just ugly to look at—it’s a threat to your home’s foundation. We use precision grading techniques to fix the "lay of the land" so your property stays dry and usable.
Correcting Negative Grade: If the dirt slopes toward your house, you will get water in the basement. We regrade the soil to force water to run away from your foundation.
Eliminating Standing Water: We cut swales (shallow ditches) and install French drains to capture surface water and pipe it safely to the woods or a catch basin.
Smoothing Uneven Terrain: Whether it’s ruts from old construction or frost heaves, we cut the high spots and fill the low spots to create a lawn that is safe to mow.
Erosion Control: We stabilize steep slopes with rip-rap rock or vegetation to stop your topsoil from washing into the road during heavy Maine rains.
Yes. We have dump trucks to haul away excess fill, stumps, and boulders. We can also bring in structural fill, gravel, or loam if your site needs extra material to get to grade.
We have compact excavators that can work right next to your existing foundation for drainage repair or additions without destroying your entire yard.
We specialize in the earthwork (digging and prep), but we also have concrete experience and abilities. When discussing your project, we will go over the details of additional phases such as concrete to give you the best path forward.
