Based in Dedham, Serving Hancock County. From excavating your old cracked blacktop to laying down a fresh, smooth hot-mix surface—we build driveways designed to survive Maine winters.
A beautiful blacktop driveway starts with a rock-solid base. We handle the excavation, the grading, and the final asphalt paving.

Anyone can lease a roller and spread hot asphalt, but if the ground underneath isn't prepared correctly, that beautiful blacktop will crack, heave, and crumble after a single Maine winter.
At H&S Sitework Construction, we approach paving as an excavation company first. We know that frost heaves and potholes are caused by poor drainage and soft base materials. Whether we are paving a brand-new home in Ellsworth or tearing out a 30-year-old failing driveway in Dedham, we fix the sub-grade before the paving equipment ever fires up.
We build the base right, so your asphalt stays smooth, flat, and intact for decades.
Whether you are upgrading from gravel or replacing a driveway that is beyond repair, we scale our equipment to fit your property.

A paved driveway is a major investment in your property's curb appeal and value. You need a contractor who understands how to manage water, rock, and hot mix.
Here is why our clients in Hancock County trust us:
1. Serious Excavation Power: If your current driveway is failing because there is clay or a giant boulder underneath it, a standard paving crew can't fix it. We have the heavy excavators to dig out the bad material and replace it with proper structural gravel.
2. Laser-Precise Grading: Water is the enemy of asphalt. We use laser levels to ensure your driveway is pitched correctly so rain and melting snow run off into the yard or ditch, rather than pooling in the middle and freezing.
3. Proper Compaction: We don't just dump gravel and pave over it. We compact the sub-base and the gravel base in lifts, creating a foundation as hard as concrete before the hot mix is applied.
4. Seamless Transitions: We ensure your new asphalt meets your garage floor, street edge, and walkways perfectly, eliminating tripping hazards and harsh bumps.
Many homeowners think excavation is just "moving dirt." But in Maine, you are fighting ledge, frost, and water. A bad excavation job can ruin your project before it starts.
Here is why our clients in Hancock County trust H&S:
Step 1: The Tear-Out or Excavation For replacements, we use our excavators to rip out the old, cracked asphalt and haul it away. For new builds, we excavate the topsoil and organics down to a solid sub-grade. (If you need trees cleared for a new driveway path, we handle that via our Forestry Mulching or Site Work services).
Step 2: The Base & Grading We bring in crushed gravel and spread it with our tracked machines. We grade the surface to establish the perfect "crown" or cross-slope for water drainage.
Step 3: Base Compaction We run heavy vibratory rollers over the gravel base until it is completely locked in and unyielding. This prevents the asphalt from settling later.
Step 4: The Hot Mix Paving We lay down the commercial-grade hot mix asphalt at the correct thickness, rolling and compacting it to a smooth, dense finish. We taper the edges neatly for a clean look that resists crumbling.
It depends on the condition of your gravel. If the existing gravel has a solid, deep base and good drainage, we can often grade it, compact it, and pave over it. If the driveway turns to mud every spring, we will need to excavate the bad material and rebuild the base first.
Alligator cracks and sinking are almost always caused by base failure. Water gets under the asphalt, freezes, expands, and breaks the pavement from the bottom up. The only permanent fix is to tear it out, fix the drainage/base, and repave.
We typically recommend keeping vehicles off the new asphalt for at least 3 to 5 days, depending on the temperature. The hotter the weather, the longer it takes for the asphalt to cure and harden. You can usually walk on it within 24 hours.
Don't settle for a driveway that looks good for one summer and falls apart by spring. Contact H&S Sitework Construction for asphalt paving backed by professional excavation.
